OLD DELHURST SCHOOL TO BE REBUILT

I have been out with Councillor Barbara Dring today looking at the old Delhurst Road school.
This is about to be rebuilt let us have your views

THE MARYVALE ELDERLY GROUP ARE GOING STRONG

It was good to be able to pop into the Maryvale project elderly residents meeting yesterday to meet up and chat to a number of residents.
They were having a good time and the volunteers were as usual helping out and arranging a good meal for everyone.
They certainly have a good range of activities to look forward to during the year.

THE OSCOTT FOOD BANK IS STILL NEEDED

Sadly there seems to be more need then ever for the Oscott Food Bank where residents who are struggling through no fault of their own, need help. The volunteers are still doing a great job. Sadly you cannot say the same for the Government.
I was pleased today to be able to pop in and iffer some advice to some of the banks users.

DONT FORGET TO RETURN YOUR WHEELIE BINS TO THEIR STORAGE POINT AFTER COLLECTION

A number of residents have contacted me concerning wheelie bins being left on the pavement by other residents long after they have been emptied.
I would remind every to put them back after they have been emptied ( on the property where they have come from.
Bins left on the pavement after they have been emptied can obstruct pedesrians and can even be stolen. There is a charge for replacements.

BOOTHS LANE DEVELOPEMENT WORK STILL ON SCEDULE

I have been checking out the progress of the joining up of the Booths Lane  and cycle path. Work is still progressing and the time schedule is still to join up both ends of the carriage way in the New year as was indicated at the recent working party meeting.
When that happens residents should be able to use the road and the independent assessor team will be then looking to get the road adopted by the Council 12 months later after making sure things are up to standard.

BOOTHS LANE TEMPORARY PATH HAS BEEN STRIMMED

Have been out  checking Tayl0r Wimpy did cut back and strimmed the temporary diversion path from their section of Booths Lane to the main section ( via the Queslett Nature Reserve boundary fence walk and they have.
They expect the official pedestrian cycle way to be connected up by the end of the year.

PLANS FOR THE REBUILDING OF A NEW TEACHING BLOCK FOR THE GREAT BARR ACEDEMY ARE ANNOUNCED

Please note the following Planning application ( no   2019/06871/PA)

Site: Great Barr Academy School, Aldridge Road, Great Barr, Birmingham, B44 8NU

Proposal: Demolition of existing building along Delhurst Road and the erection of a new build teaching block further into the site together with associated ground works. The above application was accepted by the Council on 15/08/2019.  The Planning department and( I  ) are interested in your comments on the application, preferably before 18 September 2019.

I did meet a number of local resident at the Great Barr Academy during a presentation about the plans earlier this year but I am still interested in residents views.

TEMPLETON ROAD TO SEVITE HOUSE PUBLIC R.O.W CLEANED UP

I have been pleased to see the public right of way Servite House to Templeton Road following requests has also now been cleaned and strimmed.


Please note public right of ways are not the same as rear access ways which are the responsibility of those who own the land  usually as part of an access agreement with others ( neighbours) with a right of use. The information regarding this is usually on the house deeds?

BIRKENSHAW ROAD TO BIRDBROOK ROAD CLEANED UP

I have ben pleased to see after a number of requests the Public right of way between Birdbrook Road and Burkenshaw Road has been strimmed and litter picked and the Public Right of way between Eliston Avenue and Meadthorpe Road has been litter picked.
Councillor Barbara Dring and I are currently working to get other Right of ways cleaned up to.

ANOTHER BUSY COUNCILLORS SURGERY THIS WEEK

Councillor Barbara Dring and I held a busy Councillors surgery this week. Issues included school placements, disabled housing adaptions, ASB, Illegal working, Speeding, the Glenmead playing field and why has the Government allowed the over 75s to loose their free TV licence

EMPTY HOMES NEED TO BE PUT BACK INTO USE

Empty homes need to be brought back into use.

In this day and age when the Council are being forced to look at building 80.000 plus new homes in the coming years, they need to look at dealing with empty homes empty to try and get them occupied.

In Birmingham these are needed to ease the housing problem and they can be a target for squatters, vandals and burglars, when they could be providing homes for the many people who need one.

NEW TIME SCALE FOR DYAS ROAD ROAD WORKS

The work on Dyas Road which was to be carried out in July is now to commence on 23 October 2019 according to Amey. Further information about larger scale works will be provided to residents nearer the time via notices

PROGRESS AT LAST ON THE RE OPENING OF BOOTHS LANE

A SUMMARY OF TODAYS BOOTH LANE DEVELOPMENT WORKING PARTY MEETING ( these are not the minutes or verbaton)

 

At a meeting of the Booths lane working party (made up of Taylor Wimpey representatives. Oscott Resident association member a representative from the Birmingham City Councils planning department and myself as Chair progress has been made regarding the Booth lane development road opening.

 

It was agreed the road should be ready to be opened and for use by residents in the New Year. ( earlier if possible?)

 

An independent Road safety audit will then be  carried out on the road  looking into the way the carriageway, foot paths , Drains and street lighting  had been build and other issues of concern.

 

These inspections are thought to take a further 12 months with some tweaks to the various works being made if needed and then by agreement of the various party’s the Birmingham City Council would be in a position to adopt the road formally.

 

During this time other issues may be considered as part of the audit such as the need for any road safety measure.

The Cycle track will be reinstated by the end of the year joining up the 2 ends of Booths Lane.( Possibly earlier?)

The new road is wide enough for a bus route to be considered in the future, but this would be up to the local bus companies to consider.

The small play area near the old golf course boundary should have work started on it soon which should also be finished in the new year. (possibly earlier)
Taylor Wimpey have agreed to look again at some street lighting issues and will fund some form of Neighbourhood Watch area signs for the Fore Meadows estate. They will also be circulating a letter asking residents to park responsibly.

In the mean time the Police should continue to be made aware of any anti-social behaviour or crime concerns on the estate.

Taylor Wimpey have also agreed Speed Watch volunteers may operate on the road and pass on any evidence of any  speeding they find. 

There will be an effort to liaise with the Oscott Problem parking, Road safety  and Air Quality, working party ( This includes the Police) regarding parking issues.

There are about 10 houses to complete

 Sadly the Local Police Team were unable to attend this meeting however I have informed the meeting of a number of Police related issues and will ensure the Police are kept informed.

Both Councillor Barbara Dring and I will continue to try to ensure these time scales are kept to.

IT MAY HAVE RAINED BUT I HAVE BEEN OUT AND ABOUT IN OSCOTT

What started off as a nice sunny day soon turned to at times heavy rain. However I did manage to report the need for a clean up of the right of way Churchdale to Winster Grove and started a litter pick on the Glenmead Village site before the rain really started.

 It was nice to meet up with residents using the Glenmead Village site even though it was raining.( they also do their bit to keep the site free of litter). The long grass did not help but Councillor Barbara Dring who is leading on the issue, assures me we may have some news about this soon

WHEN USING OUR RECYLING CENTRES HAVE ID AT HAND

I have been reminded by the cabinet member for Fleet and waste the following applies when taking your waste to the tip.

Our HRCs are for Birmingham residents only, we therefore

ask you to bring along proof that you live in the city when you visit any of our five HRCs.

The following will be accepted:

• Photo ID and council tax bill

• Photo ID and a utility bill

• Photo travelcard and council tax or utility bill

• Student ID identifying you as a Birmingham student.

Note: If you do not have Photo ID then a valid paper driving license with your current Birmingham address will be accepted.

Please check the internet if needed.

From my experience you will not always be asked for the above it is best however to have some handy. I find the service is much quicker if you go at off peak times.

Residents from out side Birmingham often do not have such a good system of recyling centres and without paying our council tax try use our service.

THE HOLFORD DRIVE RECYLING CENTRE HAS RE OPENED

The Holford Drive Waste Disposal site is open to those wishing to take Household waste and recycled rubbish.
It has been shut due to an accident. There is still no charge for most items taken.
I have suggested the department advertise this update.

THE MARY VALE PROJECT WILL BE OPERATING DURING AUGUST

Tuesday Club activities for August are:

• 6th- light exercise with Everton
• 13th- skittles
• 20th- Hot Meal delight
• 27th

ITS NICE TO BE OUT IN THE OPEN IN OSCOTT

Having seen the rain over the last couple of days has made me  realise finding a little time to have a walk in the Queslett Nature Reserve and on the Glenmead Village Green was the right thing to do ON Thursday' It was also nice to meet residents who care about these open spaces.
.
Its strange so many have used the warm weather to go shopping when we have these open spaces which can be visited.

Mind you the rain has helped reduce any fire risk to the Queslett Nature Reserve.

ring and I are still working on trying to find a partner organisation able to cut some of the grass on the Glenmead village green.

DONT FORGET THE ELDERLY IN THIS HOT WEATHER

The elderly are as much at risk in hot weather as they are in very cold weather.

Try and keep an eye on elderly friends and relatives and consider the tips given belowwhich may help. Pop in and see them or give them a ring if you can.

1.Drink plenty of cool water throughout the day (don’t wait until they feel thirsty) and avoid alcohol and caffeine

2.Eat cooling snacks like homemade popsicles (use a cupcake liner to catch drips), frozen peas, or slightly frozen grapes

3.Eat light, cold meals like chicken or pasta salad instead of heavy, hot dishes like pot roast

4.Place a cool washcloth on the back of the neck and a pan of cool water close by to periodically re-cool the towel

5.Sit with feet in a pan of cool (but not too cold) water

6.Keep the house as cool as possible by keeping shades closed during the hottest part of the day and using inexpensive solar curtains

7.Wear layers of lightweight clothing in light colored cotton so it’s easy to adjust to the temperature throughout the day by removing or adding layers

8.Visit a public cooling center like a recreation center, senior center, library, coffee shop, or shopping mall

9.Take a cool shower, bath, or washcloth wipe-down. For maximum cooling, keep the water just below body temperature.

10.Cover up with a flexible ice blanket – always use a towel to protect fragile senior skin from direct contact with the ice

 

 

IT IS DANGEROUS TO SWIM IN THE QUESLETT RESERVE LAKE OR TO LIGHT FIRES IN THE RESERVE

A reminder please do not be temped to try and swim or paddle in the Queslett Nature Reserve lake.
The water has not been treated and has hidden traps in it which could be dangerous. I would also advise that you do not let your dog swim in it either.
Also please remember in this heat dogs can quickly get over heated when been taken for a walk

Finally their is always a fire risk in the reserve so please do not light a fire there for any reason.

OSCOTT RESIDENTS THOUGHTS ON TRYING TO HELP THE CLIMATE

I do not pretend to be an expert on the subject and have the answers but I do care and did be before it became fashionable about Biodiversity , wild life and climate change.

I am always willing to discuss these issues with Oscott residents of any age. If you would like to send me an email with your thoughts please do and if you would like to do something locally of a practical nature please think about helping the Friends of the Queslett nature Reserve Environmental Group.

OSCOTT COMMUNITY GROUPS WORK TOGETHER

The Friends of the Queslett nature Reserve Environmental Group work closely with the Oscott Neighbourhood Police Initiative, the Oscott Residents Association.and the Oscott Elderly Residents Group.

They have joint informal drop in sessions on the first Saturday of the month at the 610 Community Centre at 10.30am where residents can pop in for a chat or to let the groups know their concerns.
They often meet their M.P at these sessions.

The Groups also lobby their Councillors Barbara Dring and myself and work generally for the local community.

They also try and promote things like litter picks.( the picture shows the NPI senior Co Ordinator Brian Brookes and I trying out some new litter picker sticks.

OSCOTT POLICE NPTG MEETING

I attended a meeting of the Oscott Police Neighbourhood Tasking Group today. This is where the Police meet up with local community leaders to discuss Policing issues of a local nature. I was able to pass on a number of concerns on behalf of local residents.

It was good to see Brian, John and Brenda there to.

CHECKING OUT REPORTS OF ANTI SOCIAL PARKING WITH COUNCILLOR DRING

Councillor Barbara Dring and I have been on another of our walk abouts in the Oscott Ward today looking at issues raised with us by residents.
Problem parking has been a real concern to some residents and we have been looking into some of the complaints and making sure they have been reported.

WHY NOT GET AN ALLOTMENT PLOT AND HELP THE CLIMATE

With the current interest in saving our climate having an allotment could be one way of trying to help.
Plots are available on many local allotments sites
.
Plots also come in various sizes from mini to large and all are reasonably priced.

Growing your "own on an alloment has a number of advantages. Its good for the climate, the food is your own and localand, its fresh, the work needed to operate an allotment can keep you healthy and stress free. Allotment are good for the environment and wild life.

Details of the Aldridge Road. Beeches Road and Holford drive allotments and other can be found on the internet.

OSCOTT STREET WATCH NEEDED MORE VOLUNTEERS

I was please to go out in support of one of the local Street Watch Groups. These volunteers are not there to replace the Police but support them.
They often help to give reassurance to older residents and report issues of concern to the Police. They are extra eyes and ears for the Police who due to Government cuts have not got the numbers to patrol our streets in any number.
This week Darleydale Ave, Delhurst Road, The Aldridge Recreation Ground and parts of the new Booths Lane estate and the Aldridge Road were covered.

OSCOTT FOOD BANK VOLUNTEERS DO A GREAT JOB

I was good to pop into the Oscott ( Elim Life Church) food bank this week. I kike to pop in from time to time to see I can help anyone with problems related to the Council.
It is much to the shame of this government that these Food banks are needed and that their are those who through no fault of their own need help like they do..
The volunteers at the Food bank all do a wonderful job helping where they can

I was pleased to be able to have a walk around the Ashgrove Elderly complex this week as part of the Oscott Labour Team.
Their central gardens are looking colourful.

Dangerous parking outside schools continues to be a major nuisance although local councillors have continued to bring this to the attention of the schools and police. We now have a representative on the schools parking committee held regularly at Great Barr School.

 

Dangerous parking at the junction of Booths Lane and Queslett Road.

Opposition to proposals for a new Aldi store on Old Horns Crescent:

 Aldi were refused planning consent unanimously  by Birmingham City Council planning commitee in February 2017 but submitted an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate. We spoke at the hearing on May 1^st and 2^nd. 2018. We were well pleased that the decision by the inspectorate was to uphold the decision to refuse planning consent as documented in their report later in May 2018.

 Taylor Wimpey

 The development is nearing completion on target for 2019 with most of the houses inhabited or completed. We have a meeting planned during the next two weeks for latest updates.

 We have been pleased to work with other organisations including Friends of Queslett Nature Reserve, Neighbourhood Police Initiative (NPI) and PCSO’s and Oscott Elderly Residents Group.

In addition, we receive regular police bulletins  and alerts from West Midland Now.

 We are grateful for the excellent support and guidance from Ward Support Officer, Ken Brown, Oscott councillors Keith Linnecor, Barbara Dring from Khalid Mahmood M.P.

LITTER PICKING THE GLENMEAD VILLAGE GREEN WITH COUNCILLOR BARBARA DRING

Councillor Barbara Dring and I have carried out a litter pick recently on the Glenmead Village green.
Its pleasing to note residents are also doing this.
 We are also battling to try and find funding to get the grass cut.

THE OSCOTT WARD COMMITTEE

At the Oscott Ward Committee yesterday I put forward a motion on behalf of the Committee that the Council agree to support village green status for the Glenmead field.

Other issues discussed were the agree Oscott Ward Plan, an update on the Glenmead Village Green and the Oscott schools Problem parking and Road safety working party. There was also a report from the Police and resident groups.

TRYING TO CHAMPION BI DIVERSITY

After years of trying to more interest taken in Bio Diversity / wild life by the Planning department and Committee I have been asked to champion the subject.
I am clearly no where near a expert on the subject but do care about it and have an interest in it as I believe it is our future.
There is a massive competing demand for new homes and business premises which are badly needed, but more mitigation to help our wild life is always needed and needs to be considered.
Also although climate change concerns are not new but must be considered even more.

I will do what I can but would always welcome peoples thoughts and views which I can pass on.

TREE SIDE SHOOTS ARE BEING REMOVED IN OSCOTT

A couple of years ago following a long campaign by the Oscott Labour team many of the trees in Oscott were pruned ( to the current national standard as agreed by Government experts) in Oscott by Amey Highways.
One of the down sides of the much needed pruning work was that those trees pruned a year or so later need their Fazal growth branches growing from trunks removed) as they obstruct  pavement. ( the more trees of certain types are pruned the quicker they grow back)

I am Glad to say following further pressure from Councillor Barbara dring and I much of this fazal work is being done.

USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

I have been out and about using various buses again today and taking the opportunity to listen to concerns of some of my fellow travelers
It is important to use and encourage the use of public transport regularly. In some cases its a case of use a bus route or lose it? *9 is a case in point.

LITTER PICKING THE GLENMEAD VILLAGE GREEN

I have been out doing a bit of litter pick on the Glenmead Village Green recently
There are litter bins near each entrance to the green.
Residents are help keeping in it reasonably litter free and BarbaraDring & I are trying to get the grass cut. Volunteers are still needed to set up the Friends of the Glenmead Village Green and Barbara has been busy collating the information needed.

Both Councillor Dring and I attended our Councillors surgery yesterday and dealt with a number of problems

I was pleased to be able to cut back some of the brambles which were overhanging the R.O.W Servite House to Templeton Road recently. I was concerned children would have been scratched by these brambles

I cannot resolve all the issues I hear about but I am always willing to try and help if I can

IT IS NOT SAFE TO SWIM IN THE QUESLETT NATURE RESERVE LAKE

Its that time of year when they are predicting a heat wave. If they are correct please do not be tempted to swim in the Queslett Nature Reserve lake as it can be dangerous.

There are under water obstacles the water may be cold and the water has not been treated.
It is recommended that you also do not allow your dog to swim in the lake.

Another factor is that for some reason know only to them selves there are a small amount sad people who get some sort of thrill by throwing the safety ring placed near the lake for emergencies, into the lake. This may one day result in a very serious incident occurring.
The Council do replace these safety rings on a regular basis.

I hope users of the reserve can make the most of the good weather and use the reserve in a sensible way.

THE NEXT OSCOTT WARD COMMITTEE MEETING TO TAKE PLACE JULY 11TH

The next meeting of the ward Committee will take place at the 610 Community Centre Kingstanding Road at 1.30am.

On the agenda will be

a feed back regarding the All Oscott Schools Road safety and problem parking from the working party.

A Police Report and feeld back regarding the Ward development plan.

You 2 Oscott Councillors will be there to listen to your concerns

OSCOTT COUNCILLORS SURGERY 3RD JULY

The next Oscott Councillors Surgery will take place on July 3rd at 7pm at the 610 Community centre. Councillor BarbaraDring & I will be available to meet face to face with residents to discuss any issues they have. This venue has disabled access.

Both Barbara and I live in Oscott and care about where we live and  work all year around for or residents. WE cannot resolve all the issues we hear about but we do try to.

FOOT BALL PITCHES NEED TO BE SAVED

Councils are being forced due to the Governments Austerity led cuts to sell off football pitches

new figures show that there were 710 fewer local-authority owned or operated football pitches in the financial year 2017/18 than there were in 2009/10 – before the Conservatives’ austerity project began.

No where is safe this is country wide.

THE NEXT FQNR ACTIVITY SESSION DATE ANNOUNCED

The next Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve Environmental Group Volunteer Activity workday  day will take place 10:00am Friday 14th June 2019

Meeting at Old Horns Crescent entrance off the Queslett Road, B43 7HA.

Tools and hi-viz jackets will be provided. Please wear suitable clothing for the day and heavy duty footwear. Bring plenty of water to drink.

Children welcome, under strict adult supervision.

MORE FLY TIPPING REMOVED IN OSCOTT

Waste team have just informed me fly tipped rubbish near Bevis grove I reported is now being moved. the Oscott Team ( Cllr Barbara Dring) and I have been in action again.

Sadly we are regularly reporting fly tipped rubbish in Oscott ( less then half a mile from the Holford Drive Recycling Centre which receives the rubbish free of charge.

DOG FOULING MUST BE PREVENTED

Sadly with the summer now with us there seem to be more dog fouling going on in some parts of the Oscott ward.

While the vast majority of local dog owners are sensible and bag and take their dogs mess home there is still a stubborn few who do not realise their dogs mess is not only offensive to many but has the possibility of effecting children's eyesight.

Please pick up and take home your dogs mess especially from public open spaces where children play. Doggy bags can still be purchased from the pound shops and many retailers.
It could save you a hefty fine is you get some and use them.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

As your Oscott Councillors Barbara Dring and I are doing what we can to support Oscott residents who want to create a Village Green status for the Glenmead Playing field site. If we can obtain this status for the field and there is no doubt this is not an easy thing to do we need the support of resident.
Creating a Village green would secure the fields future for generations to come and give the local community the say in what happens on it. Barbara (who is leading on this) and I are lobbying the Government.

We would like to see addressed and signed letter from residents telling is of their memories of using the field and of their support.
