ENJOYABLE VISIT TO SERVITE HOUSE

I had an enjoyable visit to Servite House yesterday. I always enjoy their Q and A sessions.
I would also like to thank the manager for helping to arrange my meeting with residents there.

OSCOTT POLICE NEIGHBOURHOOD TASKING GROUP MEETINGS

At yesterdays Police Oscott Neighbourhood Tasking Group meeting (made up from local Community Leaders, Agencies such as the Fire brigade, Council officers a Councillor and led by the Local Police team) amongst other issues raised were.

Parking
Parking near schools
Speeding issues.
ASB
Litter/ fly tipping
No cold calling re unknown business reps and so on.
Alcohol restricted Zones ( which is being progressed again)
Issues related to the Queslett Nature Reserve
Crime generally in the area.
NW and NPI issues.

As you can see there is no shortage of issues to try and deal with at these meeting I would like to express my thanks to all involved for putting in the time.

AGE UK HELPING THE ELDERLY AND OTHERS IN OSCOTT

Age uk to a great job in the Oscott community below is just some of the activities at their Oscott Community Centre. I pop in from time to time and can say there is always a good atmosphere there.

Oscott Community Centre

The community centre offers a variety of day activities, opportunities and events for older people and the local community.

The centre now forms part of our portfolio of Resource Centres. It is a practical and local facility for activities.

We already provide facilities for the following groups:

• Table Tennis
• Tai Chi and exercise group
• Extend exercise and social group
• "Oscott Oldies" - Day Care
• Young at Heart
• Dog Training
• Vellocette Motor Club
• Karate Kids Club

We have refurbished the centre and it is being developed to enhance the facilities available in the area and to offer more opportunities for our members and older people in the community.

OSCOTT ELDERLY OR DISABLED RESIDENTS CAN GET HELP WITH WHEELIE BINS

Love them or hate them we in Oscott will soon be getting wheelie bins. (expected March with collections taking Place June on)

A number of elderly and disabled residents have contacted me recently, disturbed in some cases by scare mongers and their rumours)  regarding how they will deal with Wheelie bins when they have them.

The elderly, disabled or frail residents living in Oscott can get help and assistance when it comes to moving their Wheelie bins.
If they apply for assistance the Salvage crews will collect Wheelie bins form their storage point (in sight front of house) empty the bins and replace them at the storage point.

BAG IT, DISPOSE OF IT

There appears to be an increase in dog fouling in the Oscott area at the moment.
I am certainly receiving more complains than usual at the moment.
Approaches to playing fields and on the corners of some roads seem to be the worse areas effected.

I am in regular touch with the Dog Warden service who often come out to do spot checks and deterrent operations. I have also contacted the street cleaning section regarding the offending areas (they will fine offenders they catch) and have also had some litter bins replaced. (bag and bin dog mess).

The vast majority of dog owners are responsible and dislike the idea of dog fouled streets and open spaces as much as anyone else. They do their bit to keep our area dog fouling free but I would ask others to do the same.
No one wants to trail dog mess into their homes and the safety of children who can catch all sorts of deceases from dog mess should be considered.

BAG IT DISPOSE OF IT

NO GUNS ARE ALLOWED IN THE QUESLETT NATURE RESERVE

I have been informed by local residents that gun shots have been heard coming from the Queslett Nature Reserve. This appears to have been happening occasionally in the early hours on weekends.
The use of guns or any weapons are strictly forbidden in the grounds of the Queslett Nature Reserve.
THIS IS A PUBLIC PLACE AND THERE IS ALWAYS A CHANCE OF INJURY.

I have passed on the concerns of residents to the Police and the parks department and I would strongly urge residents hearing gun shots from with the reserve to contact the Police and to give them any  times and so on.

MISSING LITTER BIN UPDATE

I am pleased to say I have had a number of vandalised or stolen litter bins replaced recently.
Including those missing in Delhurst Road, Hawthorn Road Meadthorpe Road and Dyas Road.

SHADY LANE GATES UPDATE

As you may recall from my 14th Jan post on this subject I said the 3 Oscott Councillors had found funding to help move metal gates in the rear access way behind Dunedin Road Kings Road near the Shady Lane Kings Road junction, further towards the road.
This we have now done and we expect it will help prevent a lot of fly tipping.

THE OSCOTT ELDERLY RESIDENTS GROUP AND THE OSCOTT RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION HOLD WELL ATTENDED AGM,S MEETINGS

I enjoyed attending the Oscott Residents Groups meeting and AGM's. today.
As ever it was interesting to hear what residents have to say rather than to be told what they are supposed to be saying.
It was also please to see the numbers of members present .

Well done to Maureen Byrne on being re elected as Chair of the Oscott Elderly Residents Group Maureen works hard organising meeting and trips as well as representing many of her members in various ways. Also congratulations to Nigel Quinn on being re elected as Chair of the Oscott Residents Association.

The Oscott Elderly resident group hold a social gathering every 3rd Wednesday in the months at 11.15am. The venue is the 610 Community Centre. They hold raffles have light refreshment's and from time to time go on trips or have light exercise sessions. When available Oscott councillors pop in to be grilled about what is happening in the city and locally.

The Oscott residents Association  lobby Councillors MPs the Police  and others organisations on behalf of local resident.

You can meet the Oscott Residents Association, the Oscott Elderly Residents group and the Neighbourhood Police Initiative on the first Saturday of each month at the 610 Community Centre at 10.30am. At these sessions it is an opportunity to let these groups Representatives know you concern during an informal chat over a cup of tea.

AGE UK LUNCH CLUB OSCOTT COMMUNITY CENTRE

I popped in to see residents in the Old Oscott Community Centre, Birdbrook Road yesterday at Age UK's lunch and laugh session.
A number of older residents were there having a laugh and a joke and getting ready for their lunch.
These lunch sessions are run by Age UK twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays 12.30 to 1.45am. There is a 2 course home made lunch available.
The Age UK staff and volunteers all do a great job to help and welcome users in the centre.

655 BUS ROUTE UPDATE

Sadly the Service 655 bus route, which previously operated along Booths Lane, Bowman Road and Caddick Road, was withdrawn because of low use, buses grounding on the highway when rejoining Queslett Road and problems with buses passing parked vehicles around the estate.  This was a part of wider changes to the bus network in the area at that time. 

Since then there has been further housing built at Nether Hall Park which has changed the road network and as a result it looks problematic for buses to access the estate from the Queslett Road according to Centro and the bus companies.

However I have pointed out, with the new housing development in Booths Lane it is likely to increase demand. Following my continued requests Centro will therefore now have a detailed look at the bus network in this location later this year and work with the bus operators to ascertain whether there is a possibility of operating a sustainable service in the area which is more accessible for residents of the Booths Lane estate. 

Following this  more positive news I will continue to press for a bus service for the residents in this area even more.

THE NEXT FRIENDS OF QUESLETT NATURE RESERVE ACTIVITY SESSION WILL BE ON THE 28TH FEB

The next Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve activity session will take place on Saturday 28TH February (weather permitting) meeting at the Ashworth Road entrance. AT 11AM.
(Please do not obstruct neighbours drives)

This will be another opportunity to roll up your sleeves and get on with some light pruning/maintenance work and litter picking. There Will also be some light  tree management work under the supervision of a senior parks ranger.

Pruning work needs to be carried out earlier in the year to avoid nesting birds.

Please come suitably attired for the weather. Children are welcome under the strict supervision of an appropriate adult.


The FQNR would like to thank the Ranger service for all its help and advice.

DYAS ROAD (PART) RESURFACING MAY MEAN DELAYS

At last Amey are to resurface PART the carriage way on the Dyas  Road you may be assured that as one of the Oscott Councillor who knows this road very well I will pushing Amey to do the rest of the road as soon as possible especially from the Old Oscott  Lane junction to Aldridge Road.

There will be some delays but along with Councillor Barbara Dring and Councillor Tristan Chatfield I will try and get Amey to get the work done ASAP.

How long:      Approx. 5 nights between the hours of 1900hrs to 0600hrs

(for updated start / finish dates see yellow signs at either end of the road)

Parking and Property Access

A road closure will be in place and access to your property will be restricted. Amey must ask that vehicles are not parked on the road during the works. Vehicles obstructing our works will be removed by the City Council and a charge levied for release.  They  understand that vehicle access may be essential for some medical / personal reasons.  If you need to get a vehicle to your property during these works please ask their personnel on site or call 0121 303 6644 (Option 2).  Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Works Information

The condition of the existing road has been assessed and Localised Surfacing will be taking place.

The opening description in this letter says where the works will be taking place as Amey do not always include the whole road length. 

Amey apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result of this necessary road maintenance and they will endeavour to complete the work with as little disruption as possible. Thank you for your patience whilst we work to improve your city’s streets.
