WHAT I DO AS A COUNCILLOR

I was asked the other day by some young people what I do as a Local Councillor so I thought I would put together a brief résumé.

First and foremost I am a representative of the people of Birmingham and Oscott.

I do my best to improve the Oscott Ward and help as many residents as possible and during these tough times this is no easy task.*

I attend full Council meeting where major issues relating to Birmingham are discussed and debated in public.

I am a senior member of the Planning Committee (I stand in for the Chair on occasions) which many regard as one of the busiest and important committees.

 For example we have been looking at the Central Fire Station development, the BCU Planning proposals and dealing more locally with the Booths Lane development. As part of the duties of a Planning Committee member we have to carry out site meetings and undertake training sessions

As part of the above committee I am a member of the Birmingham Conservation Trust which looks at many aspects of conserving building in Birmingham for the future.

I am a member of the Integrated Transport Authority West Midlands.

 This is a very hard working joint authority which looks into aspects of Public Transport across the West Midland Region

I attend their full Authority meetings where major West Midland Transportation matters are discussed and reports received. (We are not in charge of bus companies)

On this authority I have the following responsibilities.

I am the Vice Chair of the Putting Passenger first committee

I Chair the Passenger Engagement Sub Committee as part of this I attend Your Public Transport matters events to meet the public across the West Midlands.

I also Chair the Ethics Committee

 I am the bus Champions Lead member (this is a scheme for volunteers trying to improve our Public transport)

I also use buses as often as possible to act as a mystery bus users especially if I have had a complaint about a service.

To link in with the Bus Champion scheme I am also the Birmingham City Councils Considerate Contractor Scheme Chairman. (Volunteers help keep an eye on how road works are being carried out.)

I a member of the Oscott Ward Committee (with Councillors Barbara Dring and Tristan Chatfield) which is where the public can come along and hear what is happening in the Oscott ward. This committee also makes the final decision on how to allocate Community chest funding. I regard this as one of the key meeting I attend.

I also Chair the informal Oscott Ward Advisory Board where Local Community group leaders, strategic partners like voluntary groups, the Police and Fire Brigade meet.

 It is at these meeting where the initial Community Chest fund applications are looked at in depth and recommendations are forwarded to the Oscott Ward Committee. It is also an important arena for various groups to discuss issues with each other. This is where lot of the work is done behind the scenes.

I hold Councillors surgeries on most Saturday mornings where I listen to the concerns of local residents.I like to do as many street walk about to meet and listen to local residents as possible.
 I also deal with a large amount of case work for local resident* (99% of which is done entirely by myself)

I am a School Governor at both Great Barr Junior and Infant school and the Goodway Nursery and do what I can to help these schools in the excellent work they do. I attend as many of their various meetings as possible

I am a regular attender at the Oscott Police neighbourhood tasking meetings. Where the Police, Local Community Reps with an interest in reducing crime and other agencies meet to discuss policing issues.

I regularly pop into elderly residents establishments in the Oscott area to see if I can be of any assistance.

As the Perry Barr Social Services visits champion I make sure each of the homes/ Centres in the area receive a surprise visit from me and I help write a report of my finding for the department.

I am a regular attendee at a number of local group meetings where I try to inform resident about what is happening in the area and listen to their concerns.

Not particularly as a Councillor I Chair the Friends of Queslett Nature Reserve who believe in cutting out the talk and rolling up sleeves, working to improve the reserve. I am also a member of the Oscott Neighbourhood Police Initiative who are local residents trying to help the Police to deter crime.

I am a member of the Perry Barr District Committee and attend meetings as required!

DYAS ROAD/ DELHURST ROAD LITTER BINS NEED TO BE EMPTIED

Sadly with the help of resident I have identified a number of over flowing litter bins recently. I have had to report the bins in Dyas Road and Delhurst Road for example to the department.
I have been assured these and other will be sorted out ASAP.

YET ANOTHER ACCIDENT AT THE ALDRIDGE ROAD BLACK SPOT

I have received a number of complaints about the lack of action by Transportation Chiefs regarding the Aldridge Road, Greenholm Road., Thornbridge Road junction.
Yesterday there was yet anther accident there yesterday morning which meant bus users and some drivers having a 40 minute wait to get past.
Transportation chiefs believe that 2 warning signs put up a couple of years ago warning there has been 13 accidents in 3 years is enough action, I  will continue to insist the Transportation department put in road safety measures along this road. Working with my colleagues Councillor Barbara Dring and Trisitan Chatfield we are keeping up a string of requests for action.

 With this in mind and to keep the pressure up I will be meeting with senior Council Transportation Chiefs on site in the new year the current situation is clearly not good enough.
Along with concerned local residents like Nigel Quinn Chair ORA ( who are working had collecting names for a petition) and other Councillors this issue will be kept at the door of senior Transportation chiefs and the battle will continue.

This is the Committee where Oscott residents can find out more about what is happening in Oscott and the Committee is made up of the 3 Oscott Councillors.

RIDGE WOOD GARDENS ACCESS WAY UPDATE.

Access way gardens off Ridgewood gardens and others such as Frenshaw Grove have now been made passable again. (except one section which has been left blocked up as requested for security reasons.)

Sadly some fly tipping is being carried out but now their is no excuse as residents can help improve their own rear access ways as the bulk of the work has been done for them.

ANOTHER NATURE RESERVE CLEAN UP SUCCESS

Another well attended Queslett nature Reserve Activity day saw member pruning bushes and picking litter at the Queslett Nature Reserve.
A number of bags of litter were filled but due to the constant care now given to the reserve no where near as many as times gone by.

Many thanks to all those who came out rolled their sleeves up and got on with caring about the reserve and their environment. 
Its is a case of more action and less talk with these volunteers.

PUBLIC MEETING RE BUDGET PROPOSAL AT ERDINGTON BAPTIST CHURCH 10AM TO 12AM TUE 11TH DEC

Council leaders will be holding a number of public events.  At these you will be able to question the Council leader Sir Albert Bore and other Cabinet Members about proposals for next years budget.

 As you may be aware from a number of press realises next year the city of Birmingham's residents will have to face a series of dramatic cuts in services due to major cuts in funding from Central government

. Council leaders have promised they  will listen closely to your views and inform you about the problems the Council are facing and not hide away from meeting residents.

 There will also be other ways to get involved, including social media so that people can take part more easily. Now is the time to find out and question about these major funding issues.

I hope as many Oscott residents as possible will get involved

BIRMINGHAM AGE UK PUT ON XMAS SPREAD FOR ELDERLY OSCOTT RESIDENTS

Along with Councillors Barbara Dring and Tristan Chatfield I was pleased to pop along to the Oscott Community Centre to meat with elderly residents having an Xmas dinner as well as mince pies and other assorted goodies.
There were also stalls and a tombola.
The residents certainly tucked in and the volunteers were doing a great job. Well done to all concerned.

ALDRIDGE ROAD ROAD SAFETY HIGH ON THE AGENDA

I am arranging a number of meetings to discuss issues of road safety in the area, with Highways Chiefs.
One such meeting will be about safety measures needed for the Aldridge Road.
As you will be aware my colleagues Councillors Barabra Dring and Trisitan Chatfield have like myself being requesting road safety measures for this road for some time.
I fully understand due to major funding issues the Council has been forced to face funding is hard to comeby for safety schemes but I will continue to press for action on this road and others.
A meeting should now be taking place in the new year.

OSCOTT' COUNCILLOR BARABARA DRING LEADS ATTACK AGAINST LOAN SHARKES

Oscott Councillor Barbara Dring,  chairman of the licensing and public protection committee at Birmingham City Council, which oversees the England Illegal Money Lending Team, has told me: “Loan sharks are motivated only by greed and we are continuing to crack down on this crime. They extort and exploit the vulnerable, trap people in spiralling debt and cause nothing but misery. My committee and I would urge people to turn away from loan sharks and report the crime if they have been a victim. Call 0300 555 2222 to speak to an investigator from the England Illegal Money Lending Team in confidence.”

I fully support Barbara's attempts to help rid the city of Loan sharkes.

YOUNG PHEASANT SPOTTED IN BURNHAM ROAD

While out and about on one of my walk abouts meeting residents yesterday, I spotted what looked like a young Pheasant lurking happily in a front garden near the bottom of Burnham Road.
If is a pet I hope the owner soon finds it. If It is a wild Pheasant I am sure it will find its way home but if it is an early Christmas lunch I hope its escape is permanent.

YOUR PUBLIC TRANSPORT MATTERS

In order to improve the input form those who use public Transport there are a number of events across the West Midland districts they are  called "Your Public Transport Matters"  

There was a meeting in Birmingham last month and  I am pleased to report that the next event is at Walsall Bus Station on
12 December 2012 between 10am and 12noon.

I know many residents from Oscott travel to Walsall and so if you are there on the 12th why not have your say on what you think about public Transport. I hope to see you there.
There will be more events in Birmingham next year.

HELP PREVENT ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR ON OUR BUSES

 As a regular Public Transport user my self I understand the frustration people feel when if comes to vandalism and anti social behaviour on buses and so on.
 Ripped seats and graffiti, and bad behaviour are very unpleasant things to put up with.
Centro the West Midlands Police and bus companies are trying to do something about it
There is a dedicated Safer Travel Police team for example who welcome  information from the public who can notify the team about unacceptable behaviour on the bus or Metro through the See Something Say Something scheme.
Simply text them on 83010 - start your message with 'Bus' or 'Metro', leave a space and then give them details of the problem (include time, date, location and bus service number).
The information provided will be used to help target problems more effectively. (or ring O345 113 5000)

COUNCILLOR TRISTAN CHATFIELD MAKES MAIDEN SPEECH IN COUNCIL HOUSE

Oscotts new Councillor Tristan Chatfield has made his maiden speech at a full council meeting today.
Showing no nerves Tristan spoke eloquently about the need for better Adult Eduction and the need for more influence in how it is operated at a local level.

COUNCIL WHEELIE BIN CONSULTATION TO BEGIN SOON

The Councils official Wheelie bin consultations will begin soon.

OSCOTT ELDERLY RESIDENTS HAVE THEIR XMAS DO

I was really pleased to be asked to attend the Oscott Elderly Residents group Xmas lunch today.
Along with a number of members I enjoyed a turkey dinner at the Malthoust on Queslett Road.
 There were plenty of crackers and good will.
For some of those present it will the high lite of their Xmas.
Well done Maureen Byrne and her helpers.

LOCK YOUR REAR ACCESS WAY DRIVE GATES

Now the dark nights are with us it is very important to make sure your communal rear access way drive gates are locked.
Open gates are an open invitation to vandals, fly tippers and crooks. Cars are also abandoned in rear access ways and it is best to prevent this by locking access way gates and reminding your neighbours to do the same.

I would also advise that if you have to buy a new pad lock to secure these gates that you buy some spare keys to ensure everyone who should have a key has one and too replace any lost keys at a later date.

I would also recommend replacement pad locks or keys are of good quality and that a lock smith may be the best person to speak to there is one on the Chester road for example (see Internet) or speak to the Police.
ALL RESIDENTS WITH ACCESS RIGHTS NEED TO BE CONSULTED IF YOU REPLACE A PAD LOCK (unless it has the original keys) and any new residents should also be given a key.

Pad locks should be chained to the gate. There are also now good quality Combanation pad locks available but all resident ned to have the number.

HIGHWAY CHIEFS IGNORE OSCOTT RESIDENTS AGAIN

Sadly Birmingham's High way chiefs have ignored yet another call for road safety work to be introduced on the Aldridge Road. In a letter I have received it states despite Local residents and myself calling for safety measures there is no justification for it.
Like other local residents I will NOT be letting the matter drop and will continue to request action be taken on this road.

FLY TIPPING ON THE INCREASE IN OSCOTT

Sadly despite there still being a free Bulky item collection service Fly tipping appears to be on the increase.
The best way to prevent this are to report any anything you see especially on our open spaces and ensure rear access way gates are kept locked at all times as it only takes seconds to dump all sorts of rubbish.
I am urging the authorities to prosecute offenders.

GOOD WAY ROAD ISLAND REPAINTED AT LAST

At long last the Good way Road spot island and the carriage way road junctions off it (Courtenay Road and Harbeck Avenue) have been repainted.
Like also the Spot island on Shady Lane these islands and other junction marking need repainting regularly which is why I am often putting in requests for road markings. I am pleased to see in this case they have done it because the weather and light is starting to really deteriorate and the visibility of these road markings are even more important.

FRIENDS OF QUESLETT NATURE RESERVE PRUNING SESSION DEC 8th

The Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve are to hold an activity day on Saturday 8th December

Friends and helpers are asked to meet at the Ashworth Road entrance at 11.30am but please do not park to close to the entrance and respect the neighbours parking places.

It will be a roll up your sleeves and have ago session. Litter picking and light pruning work will take place.

Please come along dressed for the weather.

Children are welcome if strictly under the control of an accompanying adult.

RIDGEWOOD GARDENS UPDATE

A clear up has begun to the rear access ways for parts of Ridgewood Garden Crestwood Drive, Goodway Road and Frenshaw Grove. A JCB is on site and strimming  will be undertaken as well as some fly tipped rubbish being removed.
There is a difficulty in that some resident have asked that their rear access way space not be cleared.
It is hoped that when finished this rear access way area will look much more presentable and along with the pad locks and other security measures the area will be much better.
The funding has come from the Oscott Community Chest.

PERRY BARR DISTRICT CONVENTION UPDATE

Attendended the Perry Barr District Convention today.

When I checked at the end of the meeting there were not many resident present so with that in mind I have asked  that feed back should be sent to the Oscott Ward Advisory Board and the Oscott Ward Committee in order for Oscott residents to find out more about this meeting.

PERRY BARR DISTRICT CONVENTION

I have been asked to attend the Perry Barr Convention "your day your say" on Tuesday 27th November.
This meeting has been organised by the Perry Barr District.

A number of organisations and selected Community group leaders from across the Perry Barr District area have been invited to this meeting as a form of consultation.

There will be a run down of the District who lives here, the economy, housing, community safety, health and residents perceptions.
There will also be Ward Workshops and feed back. All this will be fed into a "District Plan"

As someone lucky enough to represent Oscott as a Local Councillor I have had the opportunity to speak to many Oscott residents over the years and will be giving the organisers of this committee my feed back on residents behalf.
However I would be more than happy as usual to hear of any Oscott Residents views on what Oscotts "priorities should be and would certainly be happy to pass them on as I think the views of residents matter.

FLOODING ON ALDRIDGE ROAD

Due to the very bad recent weather there is flooding on the Aldridge road near the Metropolitan James Watt Campus. I have called out the Councils emergency services as cars are being forced to drive on the wrong side of the road.
In the mean time vehicles need to slow down.
I have also yet again called on the Highways department to inspect drains in the area as much as possible as blocked drains can make flooding even worse and I have also called on the Street Cleaning department to clear leaves from our streets as these are starting to block drains in some cases.

TREE BLOWS OVER AT ENTRANCE TO ALDRIDGE ROAD RECREATION GROUND.

A large tree at the Shady Lane entrance to the Aldridge Road Recreation ground has blown down in the wind. Luckily it has not effected houses or the road side.It looks fairly safe at the moment.
It is however blocking the Entrance to the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground.
I have notified the authorities and asked them to deal with this asap.

NEIGHBOURHOOD BURGLARY CRIME ALERT

I have been asked by the Neighbourhood Police Initiative and Neighbourhood watch to pass on this Crime alert.

There has been an increase in burglary. Please check the front and rear of
neighbouring houses regularly. If you see ANYTHING suspicious call 999
immediately. Please pass this message onto friends and family.


Some simple tips to avoid being a victim.

Lock all doors and windows when you go out
Lock garages, side, back gates and repair fences.
Lock communal Access way gates
Leave a light on at night
Keep and eye on your neighbours home and ask them to do the same for you.

IPADS FOR COUNCILLORS

You may have heard about Birmingham City Councillors being given Ipads to use as part of their council duties recently.

It is my understanding that those Councillors like myself on the Planning Committee which is acknowledged by most as one of the main committees of the Council have received IPads to trial them on behalf of the whole council. We are also as part of the compulsory training we have to have on the Planning Committee receiving some training on how to use these Ipads.
The Planning Committee Councillors probably receives more paper work than any of the other Council Committees and to try a cut down on the amount and cost of this paperwork (as well as to be more environmentally friendly) it has been felt for a few years now that better IT measures are needed.
I have resisted this idea for some time but have now been assured as have Councillors from all the political parties that should IPads become more available after extensive trials money will be saved by the Council in the long run. 2 years.

BURFORD ROAD PLAYING FIELD FENCE UPDATE NOV

After months of trying to sort out funding to pay for more new fencing for the Burford Road Playing Fields and following my proposing a request at the last Oscott Ward Committee it has been agreed some funding will be made available.
You may recall funding had been promised before the last Local election but on coming into power Councillor Barbara Dring discovered there was no funding put aside by the previous Council administration at all..

Now following months of wrangling your Oscott Councillors Councillor Barbara Dring, Tristan Chatfield and myself have got agreement to fund this fencing. or at least part of it.
The fencing is needed to help secure parts of the field and to help prevent further damage to other sections of what is now old fencing which needs replacement.

Councillor officers will be visiting the site again to prioritise the work needed. There will be a small gap left in the fence as was agreed as part of the consultation I set up with local residents earlier this year.
We would expect work on replacing some sections of fencing take part next year and will keep the presuure on to get the work done ASAP. (we will not be having any palisade fencing removed or changed around as was indicated by others.)
I am also continuing to request the site be monitored by the Police regularly especially now we have the dark nights to help prevent anti social behavior occurring.

THANK YOU IF YOU VOTED YESTERDAY IN OSCOTT

I would like to thank you to all those who took the trouble to vote in the Police Commissioner Election yesterday who ever you voted for.
Sadly if not unreasonably many Oscott residents decided not to vote as they thought there was no need to change the system that was already in place especially given the cost and the tough times the country is in. However the new system was put in place by the Government and it was their  rules that had to be  played by.
It Looks like the Labour Candidate Bob Jones came out well ahead at  the Count in the Oscott Ward.

RIDGEWOOD GARDENS REAR ACCESS WAY TO RECIEVE CLEAN UP

After months of waiting Jericho the Company the Oscott ward has contracted to do a wide range of environmental works have agreed to clear the rear Access way behind FrenShaw Grove and Ridgewood Gardens. This area has had major problems with security and fly tipping. It has also become very overgrown.
A JCB will have to be used just to dent the problem and work is hoped to start at the end of the month.

A BIG THANK YOU TO THE OSCOTT WARD ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS

The Oscott Ward Advisory Board which I am pleased to be allowed to chair met  for the last time this year, last week.
As many of you know the Board has been a main player in Oscotts working with both local Community Group leaders and other agencies, such as the Police, Fire Service, Education, Bandywood Famulies project, Age Concern and so on.

Together they have looked at numerous applications for Oscott Limited Community Chest funding and their advice and contributions  has been invaluable.
Already this year 75% of the funding available has been used and the other 25% is allocated. In this Oscott as usual leads the field.
Sports Groups, Children, Older people the Young Families the Environments and Anti Crime initaives are just some of  the many things to benifit, from the Oscott Community Chest. We could have done with 10 times as much as we were given


Last week the Oscott WAB heard about a number of the successful projects and had feed back from them. This information will now go before the Oscott Ward Committee (the 3 Oscott Councillors and members of the Local Community and  chaired by Councillor Barbara Dring,) on December 6th.

The work done by the Oscott WAB members is excellent and free of the bickering and self interest sometimes associated with attempts to engage the local community in some areas of the city.

Here in Oscott we intend to keep our WAB and the excellent members who are on it. Other areas may decide to look for other ways to encourage genuine communication for what ever reason and we wish them well but I think if a system a'int broken dont change it.

DO NOT FEED THE PIGEONS ON THE HAWTHORN ROAD

I have had complaints that feral pigeons are being fed on the Hawthorn Road. This is despite there being notices asking residents to refrain from doing so.
Wild pigeons can cause health issues with their dropping and it is for the best if they are not encouraged by feeding, especially in shopping areas.
I have asked the Public health department to look into the matter despite their ever reducing budgets.
Should you see anyone feeding wild pigeons on our pavements it can be reported to the Public health department.

OSCOTT COMES OUT JOINT TOP WHEN IT COMES TO COMPLAINING ABOUT DOG FOULING

Over the last 2 years Oscott have come joint top out of all the Wards in Birmingham when it comes putting in complaints about dog fouling.

This does not mean we have a great problem then other areas but here in Oscott we are not only concerned about the problem but are also willing to complain about it. We do not want our streets full of dog mess in Oscott.
I know from the various Anti Dog Fouling initiatives I have requested over the last couple of years if you complain you can get something done. I am also trying to get more litter bins for the area despite all the cut backs.
I will continue helping residents to try and get this unpleasant issue dealt with and will call for more initiatives to try and get dog owners to take more responsibility for their dog. Most Dog owner make an effort but those who do not need reminding regularly.

POLICE AND CRIME COMMIONER ELECTIONS NOV15th

The government has decided we need to have Police and crime Commissioner's in this country and they will be elected on November 15th.
Here in the West midlands the Labour Party are putting up Bob Jones and for the role as his deputy Yvonne Mosquito who I am sure are not only the best candidates but also will be the ones most able to cut the cuts in our Police Force.
They are both fully committed to keeping Police on the beat where they are needed and to stop the privatisation of the core of Policing services.

KING STANDING CIRCLE RAILING UPDATE

Following their erecting this railing to prevent some motorist parking on the out carriage way of the island  despite the prescents of double yellow lines, to collect their shopping, the Council left gaps for shop deliveries.
Now at my suggestion the Transportation department  have finally contacted the shop keepers at this location who need deliveries and most have agreed to having gates fitted in the gapes, to stricty monitor their deliveries and to only have these locked gates open when receiving deliveries.
Hopefully this may help dissuade the drivers who are parking dangerously and who are also causing delays for other drivers trying to get past especially at peak times.These drivers can use free car parks which are only a few minutes away.
These measures should also aid the already stretched local Police recscoures and allow them to get on with more important crime fighting duties rather than having to deal with what were dangerous parking issues..
It is pleasing to see this cooperation with the traders and I will be asking the Police and Transportation department to monitor the situation when it comes into operation.

SATURDAY COUNCILLORS SURGERY CHECK ON AVAILABILTY BEFORE ATTENDING AT THE 610 COMMUNITY CENTRE

Due to my having to attend a series of urgent meetings to discuss the urgent lack of funding the Council now has, I will have to cancel a number of Saturday Oscott Councillors Surgeries.
November 10th is one such cancellation.

MOOR LANE PLAYING FIELD FACILITY NOT TO CLOSE

I have spoken to Khalid Mahmood MP who has assured me following his discussions with the Birmingham City University authorities that the rumours around the Moor Lane Sporting facilities closing are unfounded.

The BCU as many are aware are sadly reallocating to East side, but they are leaving behind the continued use of their sports facilities and student accommodation.

There has also been a special task force to help with the issues of the BCU move put in place. Unfortunately I was not given the opportunity to be nominated onto this task force but I will be asking for updates.
The purpose of the task force is.-

.         To ensure a free flow of information between BCU and the Perry
Barr community as to the ongoing progress of its relocation project

.         To identify impacts, dependencies and opportunities on other
development issues in the area.

.         To ensure the BCU plans are reflected on the Area Action Plan as
well as wider city development strategies.

.         To help answer the concerns and questions of local people and
their representatives

It is my understanding that their next meeting (which is not open to the Public) is to be held on December 6th.

Its that time of year again. Bonfire night means loads of loud bangs and bright lights.

NEW BUS CHAMPIONS ARE ON THE WAY

As part of a genuine desire for more consultation with those who use public Transport a new Bus Champions scheme has been set up.
Centro are attempting to use Public Transport Users who have an interest in the subject as champions to get much better knowledge of what people think about using buses.
Bus Champions attend briefing sessions and are asked to fill out questionnaires when using the bus. These are uncultivated in major fact finding exercises and quality controls. Champions are given numbers to ring if they something of urgent concern during a bus journey.
Champions can also be asked to attend Centro Public Transportation's events to help out.
At the moment Centro have a full qoatar of Bus Champions but hope to extend the scheme next year. Oscott already has some willing volunteers but will be looking for more.

DOG MESS IN OSCOTT ON THE INCREASE

Dog fouling sadly seems to be on the increase again in the Oscott, I am receiving a number of complaints about the problem again.
The main area's of concern are again the roads leading up to green spaces like the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground, Burford Road Playing Field, Glenmead Road Playing Field and the King George Playing Field.
I will be asking the Dog Warden Service to keep these areas under observation. DOG MESS ON OUR STREETS SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED
I would ask all dog owners to ensure you remove any dog mess.

MAJOR BUS SERVICE REVIEW UNDERWAY FOR OSCOTT AND OTHER LOCAL AREAS

The North Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield Bus Network Review covers all bus services that go to and between Sutton Coldfield, Erdington, Roughley, Mere Green, Castle Vale, Ladywood, Kingstanding, Pheasey, Great Barr, Perry Barr, Handsworth and Aston.

Centro is about to start the process with the local authorities, bus operators and other key stakeholders to review the bus network in this area.

This is in line with the objectives set out in the Transforming Bus Travel vision.  A clear objective of TBT is to design and implement easy to use and easy to understand network that delivers patronage growth.

Residents in the Oscott area will be able to find out more about it by going along either to the mecca Bingo Hall Car Park off Kettlehouse Road Kingstanding on the 21st November 11am to 3pm or to Perry Barr One Stop 22nd November 1pm to 5pm. Go along and have your say its your chance.

BRITISH GAS GENERATE CONFUSION AGAIN FOR TEMPLETON ROAD RESIDENTS

After being contacted by a number of residents in Templeton Road who recently received yet another letter from British gas announcing their road would be dug up, I have had to sort out the confusion once again.
The letters indicated this time Templeton Road would be dug up on November the 8th and new gas pipes would be laid.
After contacting senior Council Officer I have been assured "British Gas have made a mistake due to a letter which was was generated in error due to an automated requirement at their planning stage, which they are currently investigating to prevent further instances of."

TEMPLETON ROAD IS THE ONLY ROAD IN OSCOTT WHICH IN MY VIEW AMEY HAVE UPGRADED TO THE STANDARD EXPECTED BY MANY OSCOTT RESIDENTS
This was done only recently and the last thing residents want if British Gas digging it up.

This is the second time I have had to take urgent action to try and end Templeton Road residents concerns I am now calling for those in charge to get their acts together and ensure all concerned understand the section 58 agreement which are the rules around when and how roads can be dug up. No wonder they have to keep putting up their prices.

HEDGES THAT OVER HANG PAVEMENT SHOULD BE CUT BACK

Hedges,bushes and trees which over hang the pavement are a real nuisance. They obstruct the pavement and make life difficult and times dangerous for pedestrians, especially the disabled and children.
Those who will not cut back their hedges and trees (including is some cases the Council) should face tougher penalties.
I am constantly complaining about this problem on behalf of residents to the Council who seem very loath to take action if they do at all and this  is not good enough. Pedestrians should not be forced onto the highway or get scratched because of obstructed pavements.
I would ask all those home owner and businesses who have overhanging trees and bushes to get them cut back away from the pavement.

FLY TIPPING IN OSCOTT ON THE INCREASE USE THE FREE BULKY ITEM SERVICE

Fly tipping is again on the increase in Oscott and sadly  it looks like a lot of the fly tipping may be done by local residents themselves.
A lock of rear access ways in the Oscott area are becoming strewn with fly tipped rubbish and as many of these access ways have locked gates it must be residents them selves who are dumping rubbish.
I would remind every one there is a free collection service from the Council ring 303 1112 and that number can also be used to report fly tipping.

BOOTHS LANE UPDATE

Along with Committee members of the Friends Of the Queslett Nature Reserve I have been to the Booths Lane development site today and met with Representatives of  Cameron Homes and Persimmon.
We have looked extensively at the landscaping features which have been agreed and the way they will be linking with the Queslett Nature Reserve.
Pedestrion routes are being kept around the site linking up both sections of Booths Lane, Caddick Road and the reserve. A new entrance swing gate have been put in place on the Booths Lane Reserve boundary at the request of the Queslett Nature Reserve.
Restoration work including the historically accurate pointing to safe guard the foundations are continuing on the Old Booths Farm site.
We also heard that Houses should begin being built on the site early next year with an expectation the scheme will be finished in 2014.
 The new road is continuing to be worked on but the house building will mean some delays in the linking of the carriage way from one section of the site to the other due to things like health and safety implications, new lighting schemes and the eventual adaption of the road by the City of Birmingham.
We were given another assurance it is the intention of the developers to have the road relinked in the future.

I have also asked for further site visits and updates and will be pressing for the road to be brought back into use as soon as possible.

BERT COOKE R.I.P

It was with great sadness I learnt of the passing of Bert Cooke today.
Bert helped run the Old Oscott Community Centre for many years with his wife Pauline and was a great help to many people in the area.

Bert was one of the cleverest people I have ever met he had more common sense in his little finger than most politicians I have come across.
Bert had been a little frail for a few years now but he still kept up to speed with what was going on in the area and was a mine of information.

Bert was until a few years ago was an active member (as one of the founder members) of the Barr and Aston Local History Society and in his earlier day was a Mouse breeder who had a breed named after him.

Bert and Pauline were also founder members of the Queslett Nature Reserve and although ill heath prevented Bert from taking part in physical activities on the reserve his excellent knowledge regarding the subject of wild life was a big help to the FQNR and the reserve its self. The FQNR will be planting a tree in the reserve in honour of Bert.

 He also helped me throughout a time of my own great personal sadness and grief some years ago and I will never forget the help and kindness  he and his beloved wife gave me.
I will remember Bert
My deepest sympathy goes out to Pauline and the family

10TH DECEMBER IS THE LAST DAY FOR GREEN BAGS TO BE COLLECTED THIS YEAR.

A number of Oscott residents have asked when the Green waste collection bags will stop being will stop being collected this year.
I have now been informed by the salvage department that their last collection day this year will be December 10th.
It is important therefore that UNLESS YOUR BAGS ARE DUE TO BE COLLECTED ON THE 7TH OF NOVEMBER YOU MUST PUT YOUR GREEN BAGS OUT ON THE CORRECT DAY BEFORE THEN.
Bags put out after your last collection day may not be collected.

MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE AT THE KINGSTANDING CIRCLE.

Sadly I have to report the problems caused by drivers parking on yellow lines on the island at Kingstanding Circle have not been solved.
The Transportation department have erected railings to prevent drivers parking their cars at this location to fetch take aways and the like but have had to leave gaps for deliveries for the shops. This has led to some drivers still parking at this site obstructing traffic and making it dangerous for all concerned.

I have requested that planters on the near by pavement which add to the confusion be moved and consideration urgently be given to closing the gaps. I have also  suggested a chain or lockable barrier be put in place and keys given to the shop owners only in order for them to manage their deliveries.
Red lines could also be considered but as the double yellow lines there already are being ignored this may not be an answer?
What ever is done something needs to be done urgently.
The Police have told me they are struggling with the issue and the railing need finishing off although what has been put in place is what they wanted.
Once again I would ask all those parking on edge of Kingstanding Circle to collect a takeaway to use the near by free car park.

OSCOTT SUFFERS AT THE HANDS OF THE BOUNDARY COMMISION

As expected the recent Parliamentary boundary change commission has totally ignored representations from a number of Oscott Residents and has opted to place the Oscott Ward in with a Southern Walsall Constituency.
Clearly this has been done simply to get the numbers in the constituency to tally with a mythical number which is said to be needed. or there again it could simply be a political decision as there is no other explanation?
It in no way takes into account community adhesion, geography or how a MP from what ever party will manage such a diverse constituency with 3 different districts (Walsall, Sandwell and Birmingham to consider.)
Should nationally the Liberal Party go back on recent pledges not to back the new boundary proposals Oscott residents will face still belonging to Birmingham and paying their Council Tax there but having a Walsall MP. But again on the other hand they will still have Councillors who represent them on the Birmingham Council.
Residents are very confused about this already and frankly they have been let down by the Boundary commission.

THERE ARE STILL BLUE BADGE DELAYS

Like many other Councillors I have had to get on to the department which deals with Blue Badge renewals and applications to try and get them to speed up the process on behalf of a number of Oscott residents.

There have been a number of problems caused since the Government introduced new national procedures which have led to confusion and delays for both the department who deal with Blue badges and those needing them.
The cabinet member who oversees this issue has requested the Government look into some of the issues causing delays and hopefully when they do the issues will be resolved speeding up the process?.
In the meantime when applying for a new Blue Badge or for a renewal,  it is very important you fill in any document you receive carefully and ensure all requests for information are given. Any missing or incorrect information will cause even more delay.

DORIS BELLHOUSE HAS PRE 100TH BIRTHDAY BASH

It was with great regret I had to miss the Oscott Elderly residents group celebrations for soon to be 100 Doris Bellhouse.
I know Doris thoroughly enjoyed her American themed pre birthday party at the 610 Community Centre today.
Doris was who worked in this area during the war as a clippy on the buses and has fond memories of the American soldiers based on the Pheasey  estate who were so generous giving out stockings.
As a reminder, a surprise where an American soldier look alike presented Doris with a bouquet of flowers to the complement of Glen Millers music which was arranged
Like the rest of Dorise's Friends and Family I will be wishing her an extra special happy Birthday on November the 9th
I would also like to thank Oscott Elderly Resident Group Chair Maureen Byrne and her volunteers for arranging Doris Pre birthday bash.

ELDERLY RESIDENTS WELCOME TO A CUP OF SOUP ON A WEDNESDAY

Every Wednesday Elderly resident are welcome to meet Seventh day Advenists over a cup of free soup at the 610 Community Centre Kingstanding Road.
Why not pop in out of the cold and have a chat with them while you take a break.
This greet and feed session is part of the groups community project and it takes place every Wednesday between 12 and 1pm.

OSCOTTS COUNCILLOR BARBARA DRING GIVES HER FIRST FULL REPORT TO COUNCIL

Councillor Barbara Dring (Oscott) gave her first fill report as the Chair of the Licensing Committee to the Birmingham Council yesterday.
Well done Barbara.

OSCOTT RESIDENTS WILL NOT GIVE UP ON ROAD SAFETY REQUESTS FOR THE ALDRIDGE ROAD

Local Residents have approached me yet again asking for my help in getting Highway chefs to improve the road safety on the Aldridge Road.
They are determined to get Council Highways chiefs to take action before a major crash occurs on the Aldridge Road.
I have already warned the powers that be, there will sadly almost certainly be a major accident on the Aldridge Road. I have wrote letters, present residents petitions and spoke personally to senior Council officers about this matter.
Like many local residents I also do not accept the lack of action regarding this matter.
I understand residents are yet again organising a petition calling for road safety measures to be introduced on the Aldridge Road and they have my full support.
The battle goes on

LOCAL WHEELIE BIN DEBATE CONTINUES

I am still receiving comments on the subject of whether Wheelie bins are a good idea or not
As it stands at the moment it is probable 60 - 40 against having wheelie bins.
I found however these views depend very much on the age of the person who holds them.
For example a lot of elderly residents are opposed to the idea while some younger residents feel it is the way forward.

Councillor's Barbara Dring and Tristan Chatfield are now running surveys about this issue and all our findings will be passed to those likely to make any decision on the matter.
It would seem to me however a key question should be will there be an opt out if Wheelie bins are introduced, for those who would have difficulty managing them for what ever reason?

COUNCILLOR TRISTAN CHATFIELD CALLS FOR LOLLY POP PERSON ON THE LAMBETH ROAD

Councillor Tristan Chatfield is leading a new campaign for a Lolly Pop person for the Lambeth Road.
Tristan with the help of parents from the Sundridge School has collected a petition with scores of names on it calling for a school Crossing patrol for Lambeth Road.

Both Councillor Barbara Dring and I fully support Tristan's efforts
I put in a petition a couple of years ago for the same thing which Highway Chiefs sadly turned down but I wish Tristan and the parents from Sundridge School better luck this time.

OSCOTT TUNNEL HAS GRAFFITI REMOVED PROMPTY

Thanks to the vigilance of Bob Wild  the Bowman and Caddick rep for the Oscott Residents Association, in that he let me and others know about a new spate of graffiti on the Forgers Way Tunnel (between Bowman Road and Turnbury Park), it has been removed promptly.
We must all try to get the blight which graffiti is, of our streets.

RIDGEWOOD GARDENS CARRIAGE WAY NOT TO BE RESURFACED

Highway chiefs have turned down residents and my own requests to resurface Ridgewood Gardens, Carriage way. The carriage for this road is in the same sate of disrepair the rest of the estate it belongs to was in, when the work was carried out on the other roads on this self contained estate a short time ago.

It would appear to me this road was missed as it is at the end of the estate and we now have a situation where those roads on this small estate running up to Ridgewood Gardens are resurfaced leaving Ridgewood Gardens the odd one out.

I have now asked  to see the inspection reports for Crestwood Drive, Wideacre Drive and Ridgewood Gardens prior to the resurfacing of Crestwood Drive and Wideacre Drive to confirm my suspicions are not correct. 

More of Oscott Roads need resurfacing rather than simple being "patched up.

BOB JONES LABOUR PARTY CANDIDATE FOR THE ROLE OF WEST MIDLAND POLICE COMMISSIONER

Wolverhampton councillor Bob Jones has been  selected as Labour’s candidate for the police commissioner in the West Midlands.
Voters will go to the polls on Thursday November 15.

The Coalition government has decided to replace police authorities with one man or one woman, directly elected by voters, to oversee each police force.

OSCOTT WARD ADVISORY BOARD UPDATE

As you may recall from my post 27th July the Oscott Ward Committee intended to keep its Community Ward Advisory Board.
I am pleased to tell your Oscott Councillors are winning our battle to keep Oscotts  WAB.
There will be a meeting of the Oscott WAB on November 7th at 6pm.

At this meeting Local Community Group leaders and representatives of organisations like Age UK, the Police, the Fire Service, Youth and Young Families voluntary agencies and so on will be able to have an update on how the Oscott Community Chest Funds are being used. They also give in depth updates on their own organisation activities and concerns as well as helping to fall stall possible problems arising in the area in the future.*. This also often saves unnecessary duplication and costs  due to lack of communication.

Your 3 Oscott Councillors feel it would be a major and possible costly mistake  if these important and low cost consultation meetings were to be prevented. However we recognise other wards may wish to do things in a different way.
Oscott Councillors do accept however that because of government cuts, savings have to be made across the board but given how inexpensive WAB's are to operate and any other form of consultation could well be more costly we will continue to battle to keep the Oscott WAB.

BALL GAMES ARE FOR OUR OPEN SPACES

Having witnessed on a number of occasions youngsters nearly getting run over when playing ball games in the street, I have long held the view this should be prevented.
I was pleased this being the case, when at the last Oscott Police Neighbourhood Tasking meeting, where I brought up this matter, the Police informed me they fully agreed.
 Officers will be now asking youngsters to play on the green open spaces in Oscott, when seen playing ball games in the street..
These sites include Glenmead Playing Field, Burford Playing Field (both have been kept open for the public) The King George Playing Field, The Aldridge Recreation Ground and (Perry Barr Park just on the edge of Oscott)
Playing ball games in the street these days is not only dangerous for children with the amount of cars using our roads but also annoying to many residents who have their gardens invaded or parked cars scratched.
The Police will try and keep an eye on youngsters using green spaces in the area and all those at the tasking meeting felt this should be the case.

TRANSPORTATION CHEIFS SAY NO TO DYAS ROAD CROSSING

Sadly I have received a letter from the Birmingham City Council Transportation department rejecting an appeal in the way of a petition from local residents asking for some form of crossing on the Dyas Road near the Old Oscott Lane junction.
I will continue to argue the case for some form of safety measure at this location.

3 WEEKS 3 ACCIDENTS ON THE ALDRIDGE ROAD

Yet another accident has taken place on the Aldridge Road. This time near Maybank  Place which had to be closed a result for nearly an hour.
Clearly this is not good enough and i am continuing to tell Transportation chiefs just that.

There will be an opportunity to hear about what Bus and Rail operators in the Birmingham area are doing and to have your say (make a comment)) on Thursday.
There will be a "Your Public Transport Matters" event out side Snow Hill Station between 1300 -1800 on Thursday out side Snow Hill Station. Councillors on representing Birmingham on the Integrated Transport authority will also be there at various times along with Centro staff, to be available to hear what you have to say.

COUNCILLOR BARBARA DRING WINS SKATE BOARD CENTRE BATTLE

Oscott Councillor has been leading the battle (along with Councillor Tristan Chatfield and myself) to improve the Skate board facility Funded by Oscott and located at the Aldridge Road edge of the Perry Barr Park.
Barbara has been informed funding has been found to double the size of the well used Skate Board centre with a number of new ramps and other sections of  equipment.
I have already seen for my self on a number of occasions how many youngsters use this Skate board centre and welcome the commitment given to Councillor Dring that its size will be doubled.

FAREWELL LOCAL HOUSING MANAGER CYNTHIA SPENCE

At yesterdays Oscott Ward Committee we were reminded it would be the last time Oscott Local Housing Manager would be there. Cynthia has been in her post helping Oscott Council House Tenants for 10 years.
She is now moving on due to reorganisations to the Erdington area.

Depite our "occasional" differences over the years I have always enjoyed working closely with Cynthia and have recognised her commitment to her job and Oscott Residents.

New managers will be coming in soon but I and I am sure many other will miss Cynthia and efforts. I would also like to wish her all the best in her new role.

LEAVE THE GAP AT THE END OF DUNEDIN ROAD

As someone who uses the Dunedin Road / Kingstanding Road on a regular basis I have noticed because the Keep Clear carriage way markings on the Kinstanding Road at the junction of these 2 roads, are starting to fade (I arranged to have them marked up a few years ago) cars when queueing on the Kingstading Road out ward out of town direction, to get onto the Kingstanding Circle are not leaving a gap for cars leaving Dunedin Road to turn right.
I am chasing up the Highways department to get these markings refreshed to remind offending motorists.

Just to remind anyone interested I am on twitter.
I am keen to use these new fanagled (well to me anyway) forms of communication as I think it is important to at least try and let resident know some of the work I am doing in the area.

I can not hope to let residents know everything I do but I do what I can to keep them informed.
 I certainly think putting endless leaflets though peoples doors is not appreciated, although a leaflet and or letter from time to time is worth while, to keep residents informed.

If you have any questions or thoughts about the Oscott area although clearly I can not resolve all the concerns I hear about but at least will to do what I can to try and help.

WHATS IN A NAME (PLATE) HAWTHORN ROAD

Has anyone else noticed the Hawthorn Road name plates at the College Road end have gone missing.?
Missing mane plates from a road can distract a motorist who do not know the area, especially if one road merges into another.
With this in mind i have requested this me put right.

KINGSTANDING CIRCLE ISLAND IS BEING MADE SAFER AT LAST

After months of requests on behalf of the Police and local resident the Council are now installing metal fencing around the outer edge of the Kingstanding Island (Oscott side). This should prevent motorists parking their cars on the edge of the island which not only obstructs those using the island but has been a potential accident waiting to happen.
Although this section of the island (near the KFC take away) has had yellow lines for some years motorists have ignored them when trying to collect food from the local shops there.
I understand the temptation to do this but is could have caused a major accident and the Police have warned motorists for years about the problem. The work is expected to be complete in a matters of days.

OSCOTT WARD COMMITTEE THIS EVENING

Just a brief reminder to Oscott residents that Councillor Barbara Dring will be Chairing the Oscott Ward Committee this evening at 7pm at the 610 community Centre Kingstanding Road.
Oscott Residents are welcome to attend and to listen to what his happening in the area as well as raise concerns.

MY WHEELIE BIN CONSULTATION

Many thanks to all those who contacted me with their view on the subject of Wheelie bins (see Sept 14th post)
I have had a number of mixed views and I am ensuring they are passed on to those likely to make the decision, what ever they may be.
There are a number of concerns regarding the possible introduction of wheelie bins and these will need to be considered should the time arise and there are also a number of benefits to be considered.

Please keep letting me have your views I really am interested in your views.

ITS FARE WELL TO SEARGENT BEBB RE THE OSCOTT POLICE TEAM

As of Monday first of October Sergeant Bebb who has been in charge of Oscott,s local Police Team has left to take up another post in the Police Service.
David has done a great job for local residents over the last 2 and a half years and his leadership will be missed. However he will be working in another role which will mean his retaining some links with the Oscott area possibly in a more robust way.
A new sergeant is expected to take over the Local team in a matter of weeks and the remaining team will as ever I am sure carry on doing a good job for us.

MORE ACCIDENTS TAKE PLACE ON THE ALDRIDGE ROAD

I have been informed there have been 2 more accidents on the Aldridge Road,1 took place at the Aldridge Road/ Thornbridge Road Junction and one near the Boars Head Junction.
As you will be aware I am regularly in touch with Council Transport Chiefs about the amount of accidents on this road and am continually calling for sensible road safety measures (Speed indicator signs on the Aldridge Road , and a traffic light near the Greenholm Road /Aldridge Road Junction (also improved road markings).for example
The 13 serious accident in 3 year signs located on the Aldridge Road have had their day and this stretch of road Boars Head Junction to the Dyas Road need improving safety wise.
The Oscott Community Speed Watch Team are still operating from time to time on this road.

THOSE WHO USE THE BCU SHOULD NOT BE FORGOTTEN.

The future of the Birmingham City University looks set to be at East side as its planning application for that site was agreed by the majority of the Planning Committee few weeks ago.I did not support the current proposals) but on planning grounds there was little room for manouver by the committee.
However the issues the students and those who use the local sports facilities owned by the BCU should not be forgot which is why I hope to meet representatives from the Students union and those who use the  Moor Lane sporting facilities in the coming weeks.
I hope to do what I can to offer support to them.
