COUNCIL GARAGES NEED SORTING OUT.

I have a  lot of residents a Council is asking me why it is so difficult to get a council Garage while so many are left empty and full of rubbish which in some cases leads to rats being present.
I have been putting pressure on the Housing department for some time on this very subject.
Clearly the current the current situation is not good enough. However the Housing department keep telling me a review is in progress. I will be monitoring the situation.
In the mean time if you have any complaints regarding a Council Garage please let me know.

MOOR LANE NEEDS ACTION

Moor Lane is in need of some form of traffic calming. Those who use the road and Witton Cemetery will know the difficulties of a hidden entrance, at tight road and a bend. parking can also be an issue.
The road is also becoming a rat run.
I have now asked Council chiefs to look into the matter again.

THE DAY THE PIRATE LORD MAJOR CAME TO THE GREAT BARR J&I SCHOOL

I was delighted to be present today when Birmingham Lord Major and his lovely wife came to visit the great Barr J& I School.
As a Governor there myself I was also pleased to help show him around. John visited the Early Years Centre, Nursery and every part of the school and while with us learnt much about the work the school does with disabled children
John has a natural way with the children but the highlight for me was when he was asked if he was a pirate which in his full majors regalia he does so much look like.
All the Children and staff were very pleased to see him.

TEMPLETON ROAD RIGHT OF WAY NEEDS ANOTHER CLEAN UP.

Templeton Road to Servite House/ Mary Vale School Right of way was cleared and cut back only a few months ago and it has already become over grown and fly tipped again.
Given the amount of children going through this right of way I have spent some time cutting back some of the brambles my self as I know how long it takes to get this right of way cleared.
I would ask all those who use this right of way to report any fly tipping to the Council. I have asked that this right of way be cleared and cut back again ASAP.

ACTION IS NEEDED AT THE END OF DYAS ROAD

Along with officers from Centro. the Birmingham City Council as well as  representatives from the Great Barr School I attended a site meeting on the Aldridge Road and Dyas Road.
Once again I witnessed the irresponsible parking of some parents there, when picking up their children Some parents sadly think nothing of driving on the pavements regardless of the presence of other children using it.
At the bus stops at the end of Dyas Road/ Aldridge Road end.
Hundreds of children have to wait on narrow pavements and have to stand in the road while waiting for their bus home from school. There are many problems as a result of this with passing traffic and pedestrians and this is despite Teacher being present doing their best to help the situation. There are also dozens of younger children from junior schools in the area trying to get past as well a mother with children in pushchairs.
I am trying to work closely with all concerned to try and deal with these problems and a number of possible solutions which may help are now being discussed again at high levels. These problems will not be easy to resolve however and a number of schools in the area have similar problems which need addressing.

UNDER GROUND RECYCLING BANKS LIKE THOSE IS OSCOTT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AGAIN

When Councillor Tristan Chatfield and I took Councillor James Mckay (who has Cabinet
responsibility for creating an environment and sustainable infrastructure) to see Oscott underground recycling banks.
These banks which I fought long and hard for many years ago which are located on the corner of Oscott School Lane and Old Oscott Hill and also near the Kingsting Library have worked well over the years.
The still look neat and have far less rubbish dumped near them than the traditional recycling banks we see on a lot of street corners.
I explained to James that these could be a way forward and although, as they have to be part buried underground which means they are not suitable everywhere, they should be considered again by the Birmingham City Council if we want to improve our recycling record.

TAKE SENSIBLE PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING QUESLETT NATURE RESERVE

Given that a number of people have  contracted E:Coli following visits to Sutton Park in recent weeks which has prompted  health chiefs to issue major warning to the public about it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RE The West Midlands Health Protection Agency is warning parents that the infection, E.coli O157 can cause serious illness, including vomiting and kidney failure.
The City Council has announced it is increasing hand washing facilities at the Park, which is Birmingham’s largest, but is advising concerned families to consider using other parks and open spaces.
Dr Roger Gajraj said: “The best protection against E.coli is to always wash your hands, especially after contact with animals, after going to the toilet and immediately before eating. I would also advise cyclists and walkers to wash their tyres, footwear and their hands after visiting Sutton Park as an extra precaution."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHILE I AM NOT AWARE OF ANY SIMILAR REPORTS REGARDING THE QUESLETT NATURE RESERVE
. I would suggest as a safety and common sense precaution that you take similar steps after using the Queslett Nature Reserve. There are no taps in the reserve but  you should remember to take precautions before eating and as soon as you can after leaving the reserve. In simple terms at least wash your hands BUT ALSO  FOLLOW THE ABOVE GUIDELINES and if you do feel ill seek medical advise.

LORD MAJOR TO VISIT GREAT BARR J&I SCHOOL NEXT WEEK

Birmingham Lord Major John Lines has graciously following my request on behalf of the Great Barr J&I School, agreed to visit the school on the 19th of September.
Children are often fascinated by the regalia worn by Lord Majors and knowing John he will soon be in his element telling them all about his role as Birmingham's leading citizen

THE HAWTHORN ROAD TRAFFIC LIGHTS NEED SORTING OUT QUICKLY

Some weeks ago engineers carried out work on the traffic lights on the Hawthorn Road/  Kingstanding Road / Warren farm Road junctions and since then the lights are out of Phased synchronisation causing some bad hold ups in all directions.  When the lights change for the traffic to come across from Warren Farm road the traffic has to sit in the yellow hatch box (it has little choice) because the lights onto the Kingstanding Road are on red, then the lights change on the Hawthorn Rd and the traffic is across the road from warren Farm road it holds up the traffic off the Kingstanding Road. Given the complexities of this junction I have asked senior Engineers to investigate this issue as soon as possible.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT HAVING A WHEELIE BIN

Just to remind you while we are waiting for the official consultations to take place regarding whether Wheelie bins are a good idea or not, feel free to let me know your views.

If you are for or against wheelie bins I would be interested to know.
I have know idea what will happen about wheelie bins but you can be assured I will pass on your views what ever they are to those who may make the decision.
As part of my fact finding about the subject I have had a walk about in the area (14th Sept) with Councillor James Mckay (who is the lead Councillor regarding the subject)and my fellow Oscott Ward Councillor Tristan Chatfield. We visited a number of places in the Oscott ward where I showed Councillor Mckay which were both suitable and unsuitable for the introduction of wheelie bins.We met a number of residents with different views on the subject.
I am genuinly interested in the views of Oscott residents one way or the other.

Please send your veiws by email  to Keith.Linnecor@birmingham.gov.uk

YOU ARE YOUR PUBLIC TRANSPORT

You are your public Transport are events held in each of the West Midlands Districts where public Transport users can come along and have your say.
For example there was an even yesterday in Walsall near the bus station which I attended. Dozens of public Transport users came along to discuss issues with advisers from Centro and NX. A number of complaints were collected for possible action and a lot of advice was given out.
There will be a Birmingham YAYPT event in Birmingham in October between 1 and 6 pm. I will report on the venue and day nearer the time.
In the meantime if you have a concern about Public Transport give Centro a ring on 0121 214 7214

OSCOTT FUNDED SKATE BOARD CENTRE IS WELL USED

The Skate Board Centre at the Aldridge Road end of Perry Barr Park near the Oscott Ward boarder is still being well used. When I popped along to take a look yesterday there were at least 25 young people all enjoying them selves using the facility. These youngsters were from Oscott and other areas of the Constituency and were all mixing together to get as much fun as possible out of the facility.
When the Skate Boards Site Champion Councillor Barbara Dring and I went along there a few weeks ago we found the same level of interest in it. We said to youngsters then we would do what we can to improve and safe guide the facility and we will. We will battle to ensure the site is kept free of charge for the youngsters to enjoy.
I would however encourage all those who use this skate board facility to use the correct safety gear helmets and pads for example.

WILLIAM BOOTHS FARM UNEARTHED FOR THE FUTURE

As part of the Booths Road development agreement the Farm once belonging to William Booth the farmhouse old time forger has been unearthed. The ground plan has been exposed and the footing of the building will be re pointed by experts in the field with original materials.
It is intended the site will be part of an open corridor between the Queslett Nature Reserve and the near by Perry Barr Nature reserve and Turnbury Park.

William Booth (born Hall End Farm  Warwickshire, 1776,(sources vary); and was hanged 12 August 1812), one of eight children of a farmer and church warden, John Booth, and his wife Mary, was a farmer and a forger who lived in Oscott Birmingham. He is the subject of the song "Twice Tried, Twice Hung, Twice Buried" by John Raven
On 28 February 1799, Booth signed a 25-year lease for what became known (by 1821 if not earlier as ‘Booth’s Farm’, including a farmhouse and 200 acres of land, part of the near by Perry hall estate.
He was accused of murdering his brother John while revisiting Hall End on 19 February 1808, but was acquitted for lack of evidence.
He converted the top floor of the farmhouse into a workshop where he produced forgeries of coins and banknotes.] He was caught, tried at Stafford Assizes and sentenced to hang. His accomplices were sentenced to transportation to Australia.
Booth's execution was bungled, and he fell through the scaffold's trap door, to the floor. Within two hours, he was hung again and died. He was one of, if not the, last people to be sentenced to death in England for forgery.
He is buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, Handsworth. The inscription on his gravestone reads:
Sacred to the memory of William Booth who departed this life August 12th 1812 aged 33 years. Also Charlotte daughter of William and Mary Booth who died August 13th 5 months.
Following a change of county boundary, his body was disinterred and reburied.
Booth also minted genuine tokens as a cover for his forging activities. Several of his tokens, forgeries and printing plates are in the collection of Birmingham museum
The farmhouse was demolished in 1974, and the farm became a sand and gravel quarry, having given its name to the still-extant Booths Lane and Booths Farm Road. Until the late 1920s, it was occupied by the Foden Family, commemorated in Foden Road.

OSCOTT WARD COMMITTEE OCTOBER 4TH

BOOTHS LANE UPDATE

Following a number of rumours regarding the Booths Lane development I have been to see for myself with senior officers from Cameron Homes what is happening on site.

The drainage works are well underway and are very impressive. They include a overspill drain from the lake on the Queslett Nature Reserve along with other storm and sewage pipe works.

The road is gradually being laid out and it is hoped to start putting down Tarmac sometime next month. However there still needs to be a lot done to get the road up to standard for example street lamps and pavements. With this in mind it is not yet known when the road will reopen but  I have again been assured it will be..

The house builders may start work on site in a couple of months.?

There will be some minor changes in the foot path lay out including extending a path into the reserve with a new gate to be supplies by the developer. Some fencing on the reserve will be removed on a very temporary basis to allow work to proceed more quickly. (it will be put back.) .There is still a lot of work to be done on levelling gradients for landscaping work. There is a lot of care being taken to remove unsuitable soil from the site.

The boundary wall Caddick Road side is coming on well and fencing will be put on the top of the wall for added security.

OSCOTT LIBRARY'S NEW OPENING HOURS

Like many residents I am a regular Library user and is with regrete I have to pass on the news of the new library hours for the Kingstanding Library, the Perry Common Library

KINGSTANDING LIBRARY
Mon      9.30am   to 1      &;  2-5
TUE      9.30       to 1       &;  2-5
WED        CLOSED
THUR   10.30     to 1       &;  2-6
FRI        9.30      to 1       &;  2-5
SAT      10.         to 1       &;  2-5

PERRY COMMON
MON      9           to 1      &; 2-5
TUE        CLOSED
WED      CLOSED
THUR    10          to 1      &; 2-6
FRI          9          to 1      &; 2-5
SAT        10         to 1      &; 2-5

Clearly these hours are not satisfactory and along with my colleagues Councillor Barbara Dring and Tristan Chatfield I am lobbying to get them improved.
The changes have come about because of the hour contracted to those who work in the Libraries (who we are battling to keep) and a reduction in hours forced on us from above. They are intended as a temporary measure. We are also battling to improve the Tower Hill Library's new opening hours.

HELP PREVENT CRIME IN WITTON CEMETERY

Having heard about the shameful thefts from graves in Witton cemetery I have asked the authorities and the Police to be more vigilant regarding the cemetery. However those of us who know the site will know how difficult it would be to keep it all under observation
This is why despite the fact it is often distressing to go to the cemetery, it is important that every one keeps an eye open for any suspicious activities in there.
Please contact the Cemetery office or the Police about anything you think is suspicious.
By every one looking out for each other we may help prevent crime in the Cemetery.

PROPERTY OWNERS NEED TO STOP THEIR HEDGES AND TREES OBSTRUCTING OUR PAVEMEMTS

Properties in Oscott with over grown over hedges/trees (onto the pavement) are becoming a real nuisance.
A number of properties have gardens usually front ones where trees and bushes over hang pavements in such a way as to make it difficult to get past. This applies to all sorts of properties even in some cases schools.
I understand we have had ideal weather for the growth and trees and bushes this year and that Council owned trees on the road have gone mad growth wise but this is a problem which needs to be dealt with.
Obstructed pavements can cause real problems especially for mothers with prams, disabled people in wheel chairs or using mobility scooters.
I am working with the Highways department to identify the worst bush/Tree obstructed pavements so they can send the property owner letters requesting they cut back their trees and bushes to their boundary lines.

NX KEEPING THEIR BUSES CLEAN

As part of my Integrated Transport Authority Role ((With Centro) I occasionally hear people say "buses never get cleaned". So with this in mind with the Prime member for Putting Passengers First Councillor Kath Hartley, I paid a visit to the NX Central garage to see how NX buses are cleaned.
I must say I was very impressed. how buses are often "deep cleaned" and a lot of work goes into trying to keep them clean over night and in the early hours of the morning.
Having now witnessed this work being done in the early hours (along with repair works) I can only say I was impressed.
Thanks also to Mr Steven Rhodes (Centro) for organising the trip
I JUST WISH SOME PASSENGERS WOULD TAKE THEIR LITTER HOME WITH THEM.

PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN A DISABLED BAY

The recent  paralympic games has really succeed in making a lot of people think about those with disabilities and with that in mind I am reminding motorists you could help disabled residents in the Oscott area and beyond by not parking in disabled parking bays.
These bays are there to help those with disabilities do their shopping or park near their own homes. Every time someone parks on one of these bays it makes things more difficult for someone with a disability.
I have been in touch with the Local Police Team will be looking at this issue but with a little more thought we could all help the disabled.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAUREEN BYRNE CHAIR OSCOTT ELDERLY RESIDENTS GROUP

Maureen is an inspiration to all of us in Oscott who care about our community.

Happy Birthday Maureen and thank for all the work you do for your group.

ALDRIDGE ROAD RECREATION GROUND UPDATE

The Oscott  Councillors with the help of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve (who also look after the interests of the Aldridge Recreation Ground) are still lobbying hard for funding to help up grade the Aldridge Road Recreation ground.

Work is needed to improve the entrances to prevent access by motor bikes and the path across the reserve needs the work done to improve it.

Those who read my blog will know this upgrade work is something I have been pushing for years and now with the united help of all the Oscott Councillors and the FQQNR things are looking more promising.
The item will be discussed at the next Oscott Ward Committee October 4th.
I will keep you posted.

PROGRESS MADE ON FUNDING NEW FENCING ON BURFORD ROAD PLAYING FIELD

The Oscott Campaign Team led by Councillor Councillor Barbara Dring has moved a step closer to finding funding for the Burford Road Playing Field fencing.
Following intensive discussions with Council Chiefs funding is being found to replace fencing on parts of the field.
Further talks are to take place later this month but along with Councillor Barabara Dring and Councillor Tristan Chatfield I am now very hope full that we will be able to honour pledges made by others in the past and find genuine funding for the fencing.
I would also like to reassure residents and those who use the field that the gap in the Stowell road side of the field will be retained to allow residents to use the field.

WHEN THE SYSTEM GOES OFF THE RAILS

At a meeting with the Police and Local Oscott Residents the question of railing being erected around the section of the Kingstanding Island (near the Kentucky Fried Chicken) was raised again re lack of progress.
The hold up is the process in getting the railings from the Councils Transportation department.
(the railing are needed to supplement the yellow lines to prevent vehicles being parked at the edge of this island)

The ok for these railings requires the request going before 3 Transport Committees yes 3 all of which can scupper the idea..
This is complete madness especially when you realise money can be found for these railings. This is a matter of road safety, the Police are fully on Board as are many local residents. It is only a matter of time before someone has a serious accident caused by vehicles including vans and lorries parking at this spot.

I have taken up this issue with Council Chiefs not only the need for railings in Oscott but also a need to change the process in getting road safety measures put in place.

BOOTHS LANE RUMOURS

There are a number of rumours circulating the Booths Lane area at the moment regarding the Booths Lane Cameron Homes development.
To try and allay these rumours I am in regular contacted with Cameron Homes and Community Representatives in the area. I have been to look at the site and hope to meet with senior Cameron Homes executives on site in the coming weeks.

The 2 main rumours that have come to my attention are.
1. The development is to stop due to lack of money.

2. Booths Lane will not be reopening

Work is progressing at Booths Lane but Cameron Homes are currently suffering from a delay in the Section 38 process. The highways department have not yet been able to issue Cameron Homes with the S38 agreement as they have been waiting for a considerable time for the information they require from AMEY. As soon as they have the section 38 document sorted they will be able to proceed with pace to get the road in.
With this in mind I am pushing Amey and the Council at a senior level to get a move on and sort out this issue. The road will be reopening.

DISABILTY THEMED COUNCILLORS SURGERY SAT 15TH SEPTEMBER

During these tough times one section of our society seems to being forgotten is the disabled.
To try and help Oscott,s disabled residents I work closely with groups like the Oscott Disability Group.
As a result I am making the theme of my Councillors surgery on Saturday 15th September disabled Oscott residents.
I shall be operating my surgery with representatives of the ODG and welcome the attendance of any disabled Oscott residents who would like to come along to have a chat to me about their problems.
The meeting will take place at the 610 Community Centre, Kingstanding Road. (this has a rear car park and easy disability access). at 10.30am

For those who can not make it like my Oscott Councillor colleagues I do home visits for those with genuine travel problems and I can be contacted by Phone 303 2039 messages or
Em Keith.Linnecor@birmingham.gov.uk

I can not resolve all the problems I hear about but I am willing to try and help if I can.

BECOME A LAY ASSESSER AND HELP IMPROVE OUR ROADS

Many years ago I helped with other Councillors set up the Considerate Contractor scheme. I helped recruit a number of volunteers from the Oscott area many of whom have carried out the role ever since.
Recently I was asked to take over as the Chair of the CCS and was delighted to do so.
The scheme needs new members. People who want to improve the roads where they live and other roads in the city as well. Joining the CCS and becoming a Lay assessor is a way of doing just that please read the notes below.

The Considerate Contractor Scheme was set up to monitor the majority of street works taking place in Birmingham. Lay assessors are an important part of the monitoring process; collecting data on how highway and utility contractors are performing on the city highway. Lay assessors provide a snap shot, random audit, of a site. This data set is a crucial part of the analysis process.

Each year their contribution is recognised at the annual Considerate Contractor Awards Ceremony.
Who can be a Lay assessor?
Everyone has the potential to be a lay assessor. The City Council welcomes volunteers from all parts of the Community. Contact  0121 3037872.
How do the Lay assessors contribute?
Lay assessors complete regular performance monitoring forms; this enables the City Council to collect a wealth of impartial data about how contractors are working on the Streets of Birmingham. This data is then fed back to managers and the contractors to improve standards and develop good practise, whilst carrying out work on the highway.
The Considerate Contractor Streetworks Scheme also offers residents an opportunity to make their views count and to have more contact with the City Council, on highway related matters.
What are the responsibilities of a lay assessor?

You have to have some  understanding of the various requirements and regulations (some basic training is given) but it is the view point of the lay person which I believe is important

If you are interested in becoming a Lay assessor  for further information please contact:

NATIONAL GRID TO APOLOGISE TO TEMPLETON ROAD RESIDENTS

Following my urgent discussions with Highway Chiefs and Amey I have now received conformation (see below) that the national grid have accepted they have made a mistake regarding digging up the recently upgraded carriage ways and pavements in Templeton road and as you can from the email below an apology will be given to residents.

----                     ---                               ----                              ----                 -----

I have had confirmation from National Grid that they have cancelled the scheme on Templeton Road and they will be sending apology letters to the residents shortly.
We will raise the issue at the HAUC meetings to ensure that all utilities and contractors are aware of the incident so that it does not happen again.

Kind regards,

Laura Cook

WHY ARE THEY DIGGING UP TEMPLETON ROAD?

The continuing battle to stop the National Grid (British Gas) digging up Templeton Road goes on.
Letters have been sent to Templeton Road residents informing them British Gas intend to dig up their road.
However unlike the majority of roads in the area, Amey  (the private contractor awarded the 25 year contract by the last Council administration to upgrade our roads) have done a really good job upgrading the carriage way and pavements in Templeton Road.
This work was carried out only last year and when I heard again of the National Grid  attempting to dig up the road (AGAIN)I contacted Council Chiefs to warn them.
Section 58 of the road work act says a council must be notified of any planned work following improvements to a road within 2 years. This has not happened (again) and the Council may have to serve notice on British Gas. Only emergency work is permitted where a road has been upgraded.
In many roads in the Oscott area there are holes and trenches been dug and many seem to be left for weeks on end without much happening. Work that is needed should be done much more quickly and the pavements put back to a good standard.
I have asked Amey to monitor closely any reinstatement work carefully

LETS KEEP OUP OUR OPEN SPACES IN OSCOTT

Given the announcement relaxation of so many of the planning laws and regulations by the Government recently the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve are more determined than ever to battle to retain green spaces in Oscott.
The Friends of QNR do not just look after the Queslett Nature Reserve they also lobby to retain our precious green open spaces in the area.
Sadly the Booths Lane development was allowed but any other possible extensions to it will be closely monitored by the FOQNR and myself.
Yes we do need more homes and industrial buildings put we also need open spaces to enjoy and for our wild life.
If you would like to join the FQNR and help improve the reserve and protect other open spaces in the area please email.Keith.Linnecor@birmingham.gov.uk

NO FRIDAY RUBBISH COLLECTION FOR BOOTHS LANE AND ASHWORTH ROAD RESIDENTS

Ever since the Council introduced the new collection service changes which mean resident in roads like Booths Lane and Ashworth Road have their recycled materials and black bags collected on a Friday there have been problems.
More often than not these roads are having to wait to the following week to have their rubbish collected. This means split bags and extra litter in their roads all over the weekend.
The Salvage department are coming up with a number of excuses but this is not good enough.
I am now calling on Council Chiefs to if necessary go out themselves on a Friday to ensure residents rubbish is collected or consider again the collection day.
